Mannelijke helft duo Cindy & Bert (66) overleden

De Duitse schlagerzanger Norbert Berger is op 66-jarige leeftijd overleden.
In de jaren zeventig en tachtig maakte hij deel uit
van het populaire duo Cindy & Bert, met Jutta Gusenburger.

Dat meldt
de Duitse nieuwssite N-TV.

Berger stierf in een kliniek in Düsseldorf aan de gevolgen van een zware longontsteking. Hij huwde in 1967 met zijn zangpartner en de twee hebben samen een zoon, Sascha. "Met zijn dood is ook een deel van mijn leven verleden tijd", reageert Gusenburger. Het duo scoorde tussen 1973 en 1975 vijf hits in Nederland, waarvan Immer Wieder Sonntags de top 10 behaalde. De tekst van het nummer werd geschreven door de Nederlander Dries Holten, de mannelijke helft van Sandra & Andres. In 1988 strandde het huwelijk van Berger en Gusenburger, waarna het duo uit elkaar ging.

Toetsenist Jon Lord (71) overleden

De Britse toetsenist Jon Lord
is maandag in Londen overleden.
Hij leed al enige tijd aan alvleesklierkanker.

Dat wordt op zijn website gemeld.
Zijn familie en geliefden waren bij hem
op het moment van overlijden.

Lord bespeelde het Hammond-orgel en schreef mee aan de grote hits van Deep Purple, zoals Child In Time (1970) en Smoke On The Water (1973).
De band ging in 1976 uit elkaar.

The official marking of the Fourth of July will be the usual celebration of militarism and jingoism that has long been used to undermine any understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of the Declaration of Independence,
which marked the beginning of the American Revolution 236 years ago.

President Obama will dine, watch fireworks with the families of US soldiers and host a “Salute the Military” concert in Washington, DC. Amid all the flag-waving patriotism, conformism and glorification of war, it would be easy to forget that the July Fourth holiday marks
one of the most liberating events in modern history.

Pioneer American Trotskyist James Cannon said long ago, “As soon as I grew old enough to look around and see what was going on in this country—all the inequality and injustice still remaining—the beneficiaries of privilege, claiming the heritage of our first revolution, struck me as impostors. I recognized the standard Fourth of July orators as phonies, as desecrators of a noble dream. They didn’t look like the Liberty Boys of ‘76.”
